The Effects of Platelets on the Storage Properties of Human Erythrocytes.

Abstract

Red cells stored either in a platelet-rich or platelet-poor environment show no difference in storage properties for 21 to 28 days. However, long term storage to 42 days showed that platelet-rich environments had a slight detrimental effect on the storability of the red cell, increasing each measurement of red cell deterioration by a factor of 5 to 10% over similar red cells stored in a platelet-poor environment. For normal storage periods, the presence or absence of platelets has no effect on the quality of the stored red cells. For long term 4 C storage of red cells a platelet-poor environment may be advantageous. The idea of storing and using components separately may actually improve the quality of the separately stored red cell, other factors being equal. (Author)
