Abstract

The known semi empirical theories of the turbulent limiting layer in compressible and incompressible fluids are analyzed. Various hypotheses concerning the distribution of the mixture path length across the layer and the coefficient of turbulent viscosity, the thickness of the laminar sublayer, the form of the polynomials for the distribution of the tangential stresses across the layer, are considered. Also considered are the basic premises of the semi empirical methods for computing the turbulent boundary layer. (Author)
