An Investigation of the Anisotropy of High Energy Cosmic Rays in Celestial Coordinates.
Abstract
In order to investigate the possible anisotropy of high energy cosmic rays of a preferred direction of arrival, a detector system - viewing the integral muon spectrum above 400 MeV was developed. The detector system consisted of a sidereal mount with scintillation telescopes adjustable in declination and acceptance angle, and a monitor to indicate the effects of atmospheric variations on the count rate. Data was recorded from right ascension bins of two hours at a declination of 24, 39 and 54 degrees north. It was determined that the detector system is a feasible and effective means of measuring the muon flux, and is currently being modified to detect stopping muons where the anisotropy has previously been observed.
