Development of a Model That Differentiates between the Psychological Motivations of Successful and Unsuccessful Football Players

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to isolate motivational factors, that may be associated with physical factors, which are important to the athletic success of football players. A battery of four psychological tests was employed. The population studies consisted of 1320 midshipmen of the Class of 1975 at the United States Naval Academy. A lack of inter-test repetition among factors was ascertained by an analysis of correlation coefficients, indicating that the factors measured by these tests are mutually exclusive. An analysis of variance was used to establish significant motivational differences between football players and non-football players. Factors were also determined which differentiated between successful and unsuccessful football players. Using these factors, approaches for prediction of success in football were hypothesized. A finding was made which indicated that the correlation between unconscious and conscious motivation were not statistically significant.
