A Temperature Study of the EPR Spectra of CaF2:ER3+.

Abstract

A temperature study was made of the EPR spectra of trivalent erbium in a crystal of calcium fluoride. The main objective of the study was to resolve a controversy in the literature concerning the nature of a particular tetragonal site in CaF2 :Er(3+). A tetragonal site and a strong tetragonal site were identified with splitting values. The EPR patterns were identified by a study of the Zeeman patterns of the lines as a functions of rotation about the (110) axis of the crystal. The EPR spectra were taken in 5 degree increments in azimuthal angle and provided a plot which could be used to establish the site symmetries by purely geometric means. (Author)
