Volume Changes in Composite Materials Associated with Fiber Buckling and Yielding.

Abstract

Volume changes tests have been conducted in composite wrought-iron associated with fiber buckling and yielding to prove the existing theory that there is a volume increase in wrought-iron when loaded in compression after an initial volume decrease in the elastic range. After several laboratory tests, the author has found that this behavior does exist. The slag fibers in the matrix were found to have buckled in compression perhaps contributing to a volume change due to the formation of voids within the material which subsequent ferrite flow can reduce. The volume change was not always of the same sign, nor did it have the same characteristics on all specimens tested undoubtedly due to material instability associated with fiber buclking. (Author)
