A Possible Layout for a Large MHD Power Station,

Abstract

An open-circuit MHD electric power station using pulverized-caol fuel is described. The paper presents the methods and results of calculations on the thermodynamic cycle, the magnetic system and the flow in the MHD generator duct. A table shows the possible parameters and indices for the station; the dependence of efficiency and power on the flow rate of the working substance and the dependence of efficiency on the preheating temperature of the air are indicated. The MHD generator has the following features: a magnet system consisting of normal (not superconducting) materials with condensate cooling; a steel box-section duct with water cooling; supersonic gas flow; a single electric load; and a high generator voltage (about 120 kV).
