Effect of Temperature and Pressure on Some Physical Properties of Rocks,

Abstract

Tests have been made on the effect of temperature, pressure, and a combination of the two on the electrical resistance of rocks. Studies were made on olivinite, dunite, pyroxenite, granite, serpentinite, diorite, gabbro, marble, basalt, peridotite, and cologite. Two types of pressure bombs were used in the experiment: Adams and Belt. First, a series of experiments was run as temperatures up to 250C, then a second with temperatures up to 500C. Pressures ranged up to 31 kilobars. Electrical resistance of all tested rocks decreased with increase in temperature. The effects of pressure were dual: the resistance generally declined with increase of pressure to some value, then increased, exceeding the initial value for some rocks. The increase in resistance may be related to increase in porosity and change in rock structure. (Author)
