The Birth of the Stars,

Abstract

The report gives an outline of current theories concerning the origin and evolution of stars. The topics include the initial stage of the evolution of the galaxy, the heating and ionization of the interstellar gas, the formation of massive stellar clusters and associations, and the phenomena occurring in spiral arms. The condensation of the interstellar diffusive medium is given as the most probable mechanism of the birth of stars supported by the bulk of available data. Other hypotheses are also mentioned, in particular that of Ambartsumian according to which spontaneous decay of superdense bodies of unknown physical nature may be responsible for the formation of stellar systems and galaxies.
