Spacecraft Soyuz 6 and the Welding Process,

Abstract

Soyuz 6 was equipped with apparatus for plasma arc, electron beam, and consumable electrode arc welding. The electron-beam method was nearly ideal, while in the high vacuum of deep space (10,000 km), diffusion, cold pressure, and pressure welding may be applicable because of the film-free condition of metal surfaces. Laser beams may be used as energy source. The environment of space may solve many welding problems. (Author)
