Friction Coefficient of Charcoals,

Abstract

The friction coefficients were determined in a roll type apparatus on several wood charcoals obtained from different species at different roasting temperatures, and of graphite, to investigate the possibilitiy of replacing graphite in solid lubricants by wood charcoal wastes. Charcoals from birch wood, from birchwood waste, from birchwood containing no volatiles, and from pinewood, beechwood, and lignin were tested. The friction coefficient was independent of the wood species and was determined solely by the final temperature of roasting. The friction coefficient of the charcoals was not affected by the load on the roll of the machine.
