COSPAR Symposium on D- and E-Region Ion Chemistry--An Informal Symposium Record.

Abstract

Presented are the papers given at the symposium and the discussions on them. The topic was on aspects of the neutral and ion chemistry of the lower ionosphere. The importance of improved information on the height distributions of minor neutral constituents was emphasized. The role of model calculations was discussed. The importance of metastable states in the production of ionization was stressed; and the relative importance of particle precipitation, Lyman-alpha, and Lyman-beta sources of ionization was not resolved. The importance of precipitating particles as a source of ionization in the nighttime lower ionosphere at middle latitudes was also discussed. The observations of positive water-cluster ions were reported. In the session on electron density profiles, it was evident that the winter anomaly in the lower ionosphere remains unexplained.
