The Chemiluminescent Autoxidation of Reduced Biisoquinolinium Dications.

Abstract

Biisoquinolinium dication I(++) produces a bright flash of light when made basic. This could have uses as an emergency escape light. The chemistry involves reduction of I(++) to I, an olefin, by base. The I reacts with O2 to form HOOH and to reform I(++). Finally I(++) reacts with HOO(-) to give biisoquinolones in an excited state and this emits a violet light. (Author)
