Traveling Wave Amplification of Surface Carrier Waves in Periodic Semiconductors.

Abstract

The report deals with travelling wave amplification of carrier surface waves propagating in periodic semiconductors with applied drift field. The interaction is basically of a parametric type, involving coupling of three waves of which one is the stationary quasi wave represented by the periodic perturbation. Approximate analytical solutions of the dispersion relation show that the system may support one growing wave and one decaying wave. The theory is applied to two specific examples of periodic configurations. In the first example the doping density of the semiconductor is periodic along the sample. In the second example the semiconductor itself is uniform, and the dc perturbation is caused by a periodic array of metallic electrodes located outside the sample. (Author)
