Utility of Tsai's Method for Seismic Discrimination.

Abstract

The divergence of the M(s)-versus-m(b) data for earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions is shown to result primarily from the difference in source mechanisms and focal depths. It is demonstrated further that both the source dimension and the source time function are jointly resposible for causing the difference in source spectra for the two different types of seismic events. The source spectra of underground nuclear explosions are expressed in terms of the parameterized reduced displacement potential function. (Author)
