Dimercaptal Macrocycles; Their Synthesis Mechanism, Characterization, and Chemistry.

Abstract

The large ring sulfur heterocyclic compounds described were studied since they showed promise of being key intermediates for future synthetic work on catenances--a new class of materials. The investigation has indicated the upper and lower size limitations on macrocycles of a particular aldehydic or ketonic homologous series. A possible pathway to macrocycle synthesis is suggested. The extraordinary facility of macrocycle formation is explained. Conformational similarities are suggested between the macrocycles and their open mercaptal analogs on the basis of metalation work. Structural classifications are assigned to the latter compounds as a function of metalation rate. Finally, definite mass spectral fragmentation patterns are noted which are common to the mercaptal and dimercaptal compounds of the study. (Author)
