Humidification in the Thermal Life Determination of Motorette Insulation Systems,

Abstract

The moisture conditioning cycle is probably the most critical factor when rotating machinery insulation systems are functionally evaluated. An analysis was made of some of the humidity problems currently existing, particularly with respect to the use of the now proposed IEEE test procedure and the NRL-designed condensation chamber. A time-dependent ratio of surface to bulk absorption was discovered which varies with the degree of thermal aging. Thus caution must be exercised in adhering to the recommended operating specifications for the condensation chamber, if uniform and consistent results are to be obtained using an exposure cycle of less than 48 hours. It is recommended that the exposure time be 48 hours and that the difference in temperature between the motorette and the air 1 inch above should be maintained at 1C. (Author)
