Environmental Effects Related to Strength and Fatigue Properties of Boron-Aluminum Composites.
Abstract
It has been previously reported that water vapor exerts a very strong influence on the fatigue properties of boron-aluminum composites. Further investigation of this phenomenon has revealed that longitudinal splitting of boron filaments is the failure mechanism that is so strongly affected by water vapor. The splitting tendency is most prevalent in small diameter (0.10 mm) filaments, and it is primarily in composite material containing these filaments that water vapor effects are observed. Composite specimens which contain the larger (0.14 mm diameter) boron filaments are much less susceptible to changes in fatigue life induced by water vapor. (Author)
