Instrument Landing System Improvement Program
Abstract
Results of technical investigations to provide improvement in ILS performance are presented. More than 12 separate tasks are reported with major emphases on integral analog monitoring for the glide slope and localizer, new localizer design for minimization of path perturbation due to multipath, and development of a mathematical model for predicting effects on the glide path of signals reflecting from jumbo aircraft. Also, results were obtained from analyses of snow cover effects on the glide path. Analyses to determine modulator and bridge tolerances are presented together with recommendations for revised tolerances. Specifications and tolerances are presented for preparation of the ground planes in the vicinity of image glide paths. These are based on previously developed mathematical models. Conclusions and recommendations for improvements in glide path performance at specific sites are presented.
