Second Order Effects in the Weibel Instability.

Abstract

An expression is derived for the coupling of two purely growing transverse Weibel modes in second order to give rise to a single electrostatic longitudinal mode. Comparison with numerical experiments shows agreement to within 5 percent for the magnitude and phase of the coupling. It is found that this mechanism does not contribute significantly to saturation of the instability. (Author)
