Recruits Postservice Occupational and Educational Plans: Nature and the Extent of Influence from Early Military Experience

Abstract

Data on the nature of recruits' postservice occupational and educational plans, and on the influence that the first few weeks of military service have on such plans, were collected in 1971 at Army. Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force sites. One questionnaire was administered at the beginning, and one near the end of the basic training. Results are given on recruits who planned to be working fulltime one year after service, but who were uncertain as to the type of work they would be doing. The data suggest that 30-40% of the men considered their initial assignment out of line with their job plans for one year after service. Results on occupational plans for age 35 closely paralleled thosr for one year after service, with the men appearing to be more definite about the kind of work they would be doing. About 40% said that they planned to be attending college one year after leaving service. Results showed whether early service experience had impact on postservice vocational and educational plans.
