Formation and Reactions of Azide Radicals

Abstract

The work has, detected and observed the azide radical in condensed phase, produced by both photolytic and radiolytic reactions. In addition to the spectral absorption properties of N3, information was obtained on the chemical properties of this radical as well as on the decay kinetics. The highly exothermic reaction 2N3 (doublet Pi(g)) to N6 to 3N2(singlet Sigma (g)(+)) is the reaction which is considered important in the decomposition of solid ionic azides.
