Scattering of an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) by Apertures in Metal Structures,

Abstract

Previous work is done on the penetration of EMP through aperatures, included the investigation of the problem for specific geometries. The case examined in the present study is that of diffraction by a rectangular aperture in a structure. Suzuki applied the variational method for a rectangular aperture in an infinite plane to compute the transmission coefficient. The author also derived an approximate expression for the transmission coefficient for a long and narrow slot and was able to show excellent agreement with calculations using the variational method. The experimental method and theoretical analysis described in this report shows how Suzuki's analysis can be applied to estimate the EMP within a structure resulting from penetrations through rectangular apertures.
