The Heterogeneous Decomposition of Hydrazine: Part 5. The Kinetics of the Decomposition of Liquid Hydrazine on a Supported Ruthenium Catalyst

Abstract

The heterogeneous decomposition of liquid hydrazine on a supported ruthenium catalyst is a complex reaction. The kinetics have been analysed in terms of two simultaneous reactions: 3N2H4 to N2 + 4NH3 and 2N2H4 to N2 + H2 + 2NH3. Both reactions are first order with respect to hydrazine concentration. It is suggested that the first reaction occurs when hydrazine is associatively adsorbed on the catalyst but that when it is dissociatively adsorbed the second reaction occurs.
