Rain Erosion Characteristics of Thermal Protection System Materials at Subsonic Velocities

Abstract

The relative rain erosion resistance of low density-thermal protection materials for the space shuttle were evaluated at velocities of 200, 350, and 410 miles per hour, angles of attack of 10, 20, 40, and 90 degrees and rainfall intensities of 1/4, 1/2 and 1 inch per hour on the AFML-Bell rotating arm rain erosion test apparatus.
