Approximate Second Invariant for a Dipole Field.

Abstract

Mathematically self-consistent analytical approximations to the second invariant and drift frequency in terms of pitch angle and energy are deduced from an existing analytical approximation to the bounce period of a charged particle trapped in the field of a magnetic dipole. The numerical accuracy of the resulting expressions is significantly better than that of the approximations to these functions customarily found in the literature. The results are potentially of interest in simplifying the theories of bimodal diffusion and other dynamical phenomena in the magnetosphere. (Author)
