A Study of Gaseous Negative Ions.

Abstract

The report is a summary description of research carried out on collisions of low-energy (2-400 eV) ions with gas atoms and molecules. The energy dependences of total cross-sections for a variety of ion-neutral processes were measured, using ion-beam gas-target techniques, in which a beam of mass-analyzed ions of well defined energy is directed into a Maxwellian target gas. Product ions (or electrons) which emerge from the collision region are then identified and detected quantitatively by a second mass analyzer, or by other appropriate means. The specific processes studied were: Charge transfer; dissociative Charge transfer; Collision-induced dissociation; Collisional electron detachment; and Ion-molecule reactions. (Author)
