Nonlinear Interaction of Long, Unmodulated Whistler-Mode Signals and Gyroresonant,

Abstract

Equations are derived which govern modulation of a continuous wave whistler-mode transition by resonant particles in a region limited in spatial extent. It is found that nonlinear wave-particle interaction results in amplitude modulation but not phase modulation. An integral equation is found which gives the temporal behavior of the amplitude of the signal emerging from the region. Analysis of this equation will be done numerically in a later paper. (Author)
