Serpukhov Proton Accelerator and Physical Investigations Carried Out on Particle Beams with Energies up to 70 GeV,

Abstract

The article discusses the Serpukhov proton synchrotron with an energy of 70 GeV and investigations made with it. The maximum intensity obtained on the accelerator is 1.5 x 10 to the power of 12 protons per cycle. Flows of pi-mesons reach 5,000,000 and antiprotons 100,000 particles per day. Flows of antideuterons comprise tens of thousands per day. Development of the accelerator of the Institute of High-Energy Physics facilitated the expansion of the collaboration of scientists of different institutes of the USSR and also international collaboration in the field of high-energy physics. Used in the experiment were three dimensional gas targets containing deuterium under a pressure of 70 atm at the temperature of liquid nitrogen and also a liquid hydrogen target with a volume of 200 liters.
