Effect of Casting Conditions on the Quality of the Rolling Surface of Ball Bearing Steel,

Abstract

A considerable part of the ball bearing steel at the Dneprospetsstal plant was damaged by surface defects, which leads to rejection and great losses due to restripping of the rolled product and smaller dimensions. In so doing, surface flaws for the most part take place on metal rolled from hot loaded ingots; billets rolled from cold loaded ingots or with the considerable delay in hot loading, have, as a rule, the best surface. Primarily this pertains to metal teemed under a slag of exothermic compounds. In connection with this, a study was made of the effect of the conditions of teeming on the surface condition of the ingots and the rolling. Cast metal was investigated on hollow shells of ingots obtained by the method of pouring out the liquid residue on two melts. In so doing, ingot 1 was obtained with teeming into a casting mold lubricated with Kuzbas varnish, and ingot 2 - with the use of exothermic compounds.
