Synthesis of a Stable Magnetoplasma.
Abstract
A maximum entropy principle is used to determine the equilibrium distribution of a one component, azimuthally symmetric magnetoplasma. From this distribution, the radial dependence of number density, electric field and magnetic field is determined for an ideal stable plasma. Further insight is gained by examining the theory of collisionless single particle motion. The implications of the ideal analysis are illustrated by numerical examples for both a deuterium and an argon plasma. Some major deficiencies of the ideal analysis are then presented and the effect of one of these, collisions between species, is examined to determine the collision integral for the Boltzmann equation which further constrains the plasma parameters. Finally, the relative relaxation times for various processes are determined. (Author)
