The Effect of Injection on Base Drag at Transonic Speed,

Abstract

The problem concerning the possible reduction of the transonic drag for a high speed airplane has been studied. Attention has been focused on decreasing the drag forces on the aft portion of the vehicle. The effect of the injection of a small amount of air in the rear of the model has been experimentally investigated. The alteration of the transonic flow field in the shock-boundary layer interaction region, increases the average pressure on the aft section. The required amount of air was relatively low, because of the high sensitivity of the interaction region to any small change in the flow regime.
