Ionic Composition of Gas Discharges.

Abstract

The ionic composition of plasmas produced in helium-hydrogen, neon-hydrogen and helium-hydrogen-xenon mixtures was determined for various hydrogen and xenon concentration and for total gas pressures varying from 1 to 10 Torr. For gas pressures larger than about 2 Torr the H3(+) ion was the dominant ion for all binary mixtures studied. In the triple mixture the XeH(+) ion was the major ion for pressures larger than about 4 Torr. The ratio of the electric field strength and the gas pressure in the positive column of a dc discharge was measured in helium-hydorgen and helium-hydrogen-xenon mixtures by means of a new method.
