A Hardware Interface for a Computer-Controlled Ophthalmic Refraction System.
Abstract
The design of a hardware interface to implement an experimental computer-controlled ophthalmic refraction system is described. The interface enables a PDP-8/E computer to control all devices necessary to perform an automatic refraction, including a refractor, slide projectors, tape recorders, patient response devices, and displays, through transmission of a 12-bit work which is encoded to specify the device and activity to be performed. The interface decodes this word, uses various schemes to efficiently control the different devices, and enables the input to the computer of device statuses and patient responses. By enabling all of the necessary processes to be performed under program control, a computer-controlled ophthalmic refraction can be performed. (Author)
