Determination of Apparent Density of Propellants and Powdered Materials of Interest in Ordnance.

Abstract

A study was made of methods for the determination of apparent density of propellants and powdered materials of interest in Ordance. The apparent density of six propellants was determined by the following three free-fall techniques: (a) DuPont Densitometer method, (b) cylinder method using cylinders of 397, 284, 93.6, 26.9, and 15.3 m1, (c) Scott Volumeter method. The apparent density of three powdered materials (powdered magnesium, polyvinyl chloride, and strontium peroxide) was determined by two free-fall techniques: (a) Scott Volumeter method, (b) graduate cylinder method using graduate cylinders of 100, 50, 25, and 10 ml. The apparent density of the powdered materials by the dropping compaction technique was determined using graduate cylinders of 100, 50, 25, and 10 ml. Results by the different techniques by two operators were compared. (Author)
