The Determination of Aliphatic Aldehydes in Stack Gases. 3-Methyl-2-Benzothiazolone Hydrazone Hydrochloride (MBTH) Method.

Abstract

Numerous methods have been employed to determine aliphatic aldehydes in ambient air and in stack gases. In most precedures aliphatic aldehydes are reported as formaldehyde since it has been shown that formaldehyde is not only fairly stable in air but is also the predominant aldehyde in polluted air. A very sensitive method for the determination of formaldelyde is described using 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolone hydrazone hydrochloride (MBTH). The mechanism includes the following steps: reaction of the aldehyde with 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolone hydrazone to form the azine as well as positively charged cation from the MBTH by oxidation; and then formation of the strongly blue-colored complex cation made up of the azine plus the cation. Colorimetric analysis is then used for final determination.
