Interim Report on Pilot Program for Pesticide Monitoring of Water on Air Force Bases.

Abstract

A developmental program in pesticide monitoring was initiated in early 1969. Five Air Force bases cooperated in this pilot study. Monthly one-litter grab samples were collected at points where the waterway (s) entered and left the base. Wells were sampled when surface water inlets were absent. Samples submitted were analyzed for Aldrin, DDD, DDE, DDT, Dieldrin, Endrin, Heptachlor, Heptachlor Epoxide and Lindane using gas chromatography with electron capture and microcoulometry following solvent extraction and concentration of the pesticide. Pesticides were detected in 53% of the samples, but no significant correlation could be made regarding the time or source of the pesticide usage which resulted in the pollution. Suggested guidelines for a minimal pesticide monitoring program are presented. (Author)
