MILOCMED 1968: A Drogue Experiment in the Ionian Sea. Part II. A Study of a Large-Scale Diffusion.
Abstract
In May 1968, east of Malta, six surface floats (drogues) were tracked for a month and their positions recorded every half hour in an attempt to study oceanic diffusion processes. An analysis of these data is based on the statistical characteristics of distances between pairs of floats. Richardson's neighbour-diffusion theory leads to a diffusion equation generally used for this kind of experiment. The analysis consists in calculating a neighbour diffusivity analogous to the turbulent diffusion coefficient. The diffusion equation proposed by Richardson appears to be a special case of the Kolmogorov equation. Out to a certain range results are in good agreement with previous studies, showing the well known '4/3 law'. Beyond this range, however, the neighbour diffusivity becomes nearly constant. (Author)
