An Experimental Study of a Complete Expansion.
Abstract
The fundamental problem of a complete expansion into an evacuated tube was studied experimentally. The study consisted of two parts: the development of the expansion in the diaphragm region; and the reflection process in the region of the tube end wall. The theoretical treatment of the endwall reflection process employed a modified one-dimensional continuum theory. The isentropic expansion solution was empirically modified to include the effects of translational freezing of the gas. In addition to the endwall pressure data, sequential schlieren photographs showed a very strong bifurcation of the normal shock wave which formed upon the arrival of the frozen tail of the expansion wave.
