A Proposed Circulation Model for Endicott Arm, an Alaskan Fjord.

Abstract

A qualitative circulation model is developed for a fjord estuary in which tidal forces are large and fresh water input is small. This is accomplished by analyzing several years of field data collected by the Institute of Marine Science in Endicott Arm, an Alaskan fjord. In Endicott Arm the fresh water input drops to near zero during winter and spring, but the gradient across the sill is maintained because the water outside the sill (source water) becomes more dense. Endicott Arm appears to exhibit the proposed circulation throughout the year. (Author)
