The Role of Energy Dissipation in Drawn Wire Fatigue,
Abstract
The elastic-plastic solution for a circular cylinder subjected to static-tension and variable torsion is deduced for a material exhibiting a second order polynomial stress-strain relation. Strain energy loops were calculated and the dissipative energies were equated to wire life for drawn XIP and XXIP wires. The usual log-log relations between life and effective stress, alternating strain and hysteresis strain energy were found to fit the data satisfactorily. The fatigue data was determined to be compatible with predicted values based on tensile test material properties for the XIP wires, but not for the XXIP wires. (Author)
