Torsion of a Fluted Bar with a Rope-Like Cross-Section,

Abstract

The complex variable method of solving two-dimensional problems in elasticity is used. A mapping function suitable for any basically circular outline with an integral number of external or internal lobes periodically spaced around its periphery is developed. An adequate method for evaluating the coefficients is demonstrated and coefficient values are tabulated. Expressions for the torsional constant, warping function, and shearing stress are developed and their variation with the number of strands are displayed. (Author)
