Development of Instrumentation to Monitor the Radial Deformation of the Medium Around an Underground Opening.

Abstract

The objectives of the program are to develop two unique types of instrumentation suitable for measuring deflection of the medium surrounding an underground opening. Research during the first year is directed toward development of system concepts and component evaluation. The two systems being developed are referred to as the Self-Contained System and the Laser System. Concept selection and component evaluation have been completed for both systems. Prototype design and fabrication has been completed for the self-contained system. The report describes the work completed on both systems during the first year of the program, with emphasis on accomplishments during the last half of the year. Included is a summary of work accomplished followed by detailed discussions for each system. (Author)
