Cold Regions Science and Engineering Monograph, Section 11-A2a: Seismic Exploration in Cold Regions,

Abstract

The Monograph contains a comprehensive review of the use of seismic methods and related techniques based on elastic waves, to gain information on the geometry and physical properties of the substrata in cold regions, particularly snow, ice and frozen ground. Pertinent elastic properties of these materials are described and methods for determining seismic velocities are summarized. Theories and application of reflection and refraction soundings on glaciers, continental ice sheets, ice shelves, and frozen ground are reviewed. Surveys employing surface waves, and special application of elastic waves, are described. (Author)
