Investigation of the Effect of Magnesium Oxide Additions on the Viscosity of Blast Furnace Slags at the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant,

Abstract

Determination of the effect of Mg additions of 3.5 to 15% on the viscosity of slags with basicities of 0.9-1.2 were conducted within 1200-1500C. The heats were made in a crucible lowered into a graphite pocket inside a resistance furnace with carbon heaters. Under conditions prevailing at the Karaganda Plant for smelting conversion pig iron it is advisable to use slags with basicities of 1.05-1.15 at MgO contents of 7.0-10%. It is suggested that this conclusion be verified under actual production conditions.
