Research on Zircon Polarizers.

Abstract

Experiments on the growth of single crystal zircon (ZrSiO4) were continued with the hydrothermal method. High quality growth at 0.003 inch per day continued to be obtained in 1.0 inch internal diameter autoclaves when used near 600C with a mixed minearalizer of 4m KF-1m LiF. At temperatures near 700C growth rates on (100) seeds approached 0.010 inch per day in 1.5 inch internal diameter autoclaves, but the growth quality was poor. Wadeite (K2ZrSi3O9) nucleation has been reduced substantially by changing to a 2m KF-1m LiF solution at the higher temperatures. Since good quality growth has been obtained near the end of some experiments, it is felt that high quality growth can be achieved by eliminating wadeite and maintaining a lower thermal gradient between the nutrient and seed.
