Laser Inspection Fixture for Major Caliber Gun Barrels.

Abstract

The study was conducted to establish the feasibility of using a laser beam and detector head to improve the inspection of gun barrels by increasing the accuracy and reducing the inspection time per barrel. The laser system results were excellent when inspecting gun barrels for wall thickness, concentricity and droop; however, for repeated accuracy this system requires stringent rigidity between the inspecting laser and the inspected barrel. The final results of the study proves that the laser system for inspecting gun barrels is feasible and if properly aligned and supported, inspection accuracy is increased while inspection time is decreased.
