Comparison of Under-Ice and Open Water Transmission Loss Measurements in Baffin Bay,
Abstract
An experiment was conducted during early winter conditions to obtain underwater acoustic transmission loss data in ice-free water and water with a broken cover of sea ice under similar refractive conditions. Measurements were obtained of sound transmission and ambient noise using modified, calibrated sonobuoys and standard U.S. Navy explosive sound sources. The received acoustic signals were recorded broadband and analyzed in selected octave bands. Transmission loss data are presented with the results for ice-covered water compared with the results for ice-free water. Acoustic transmission loss in Baffin Bay with a shallow source depth under refreezing conditions is slightly higher in ice-covered water than in open water. (Author)
