Pulsed Neon Laser Bathymetric Studies Using Simulated Delaware Bay Waters.
Abstract
The measurements and calculations given in this report deal with the feasibility of deploying an airborne laser transmitter/receiver system to measure water depths in highly turbid water. A new technique is described for simulating natural turbidity conditions in the laboratory. The results of the study simulating conditions in Delaware Bay show that 15 attenuation lengths is the maximum depth of water that can be penetrated to yield detectable signals by an airborne neon laser/receiver system flying at an altitude of 500 meters.
