Effect of Atomic Oxygen upon the N2 Vibrational Temperature in the Lower Thermosphere.

Abstract

The effects on vibrational temperatures in the thermosphere, of recent laboratory measurements of the quenching of vibrationally excited nitrogen by atomic oxygen, are evaluated. The newly acquired data indicate vibrational temperatures that remain very close to the ambient kinetic temperature at all altitudes and local times. (Author)
